Issue 4: IN NAAM VAN WIE
On December 19, the sixth and final meeting of Issue 4 will take place, by guest curator Glenn Helberg: IN NAAM VAN WIE.
During this performance, the role of religion in the colonial and slavery past will be central, with an emphasis on personal stories and the role of spirituality in finding identity. The amount of pain and disruption that the "divide and rule" initiated by the colonizer has caused, and not only in one generation but in successive generations, is immeasurably large and deep. In this performance, these mechanisms are further dismantled and questions are (re)posed in order to stay connected through our stories.
The fourth Issue of SHEBANG researched how divisions between diasporic communities and the oppression of identity(ies) can be broken. Helberg invited thinkers, makers and artists from different diasporic communities to come to a joint story based on their own experiences, in which all stories can stand side by side. People from the African, Surinamese-indigenous, Maroon, Surinamese-Chinese, Hindustani, Javanese, Curaçaoan, Bonairean, Aruban, Sint Maarten, Statian and Saban communities were worked on. The creative sessions resulted in theatrical performances with actors and dancers, with a permanent team of artists making the visual translation. With the common goal of understanding division and domination and making it clear that we want to break with this.
The performance is made with religious leaders Duncan Wielzen (RC), Lodi van de Kamp (Judaism), Andreas Wöhle (Lutheran), Clifton Walker (EBG) and Dwight Fransman (Winti). With artists and performers Alydia Wever, Fré Calmes and Raul Balai.
